The Mata Aedes trap for controlling Aedes aegypti eggs and adults is recommended for use in outdoor areas, such as balconies. The trap simulates a mosquito breeding ground, and is made of a black plastic pot, lined internally with red suede paper impregnated with fungus. Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, covered in blood, are attracted to lay their eggs inside the trap. The mosquitoes lay their eggs on the internal walls, 1 cm from the water line, on top of the paper with fungus. When touching the fungus, the adult mosquitoes become infected and die in less than 48 hours. The mosquito eggs placed on the paper are also infected with fungus and die, failing to develop into larvae.
